Where it came from
Shadowbeast Sighting originated in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Double Feature. This set served as a stylized consolidation of the earlier expansions Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Innistrad: Crimson Vow, utilizing a distinctive monochromatic, silver-screen aesthetic to evoke classic gothic horror cinema. The release was intended to provide a curated, thematic draft experience that highlighted the eerie, folklore-driven setting of the Innistrad plane.
The card illustration for this specific printing was carried over from the original Midnight Hunt release, rendered by artist Jason Felix. The design utilizes deep shadows and high-contrast lines to emphasize the creature's looming, unnatural form, fitting perfectly within the black-and-white art direction of the Double Feature treatment. Upon release, the set was noted for its unique visual presentation, which sought to bridge the gap between traditional trading card art and the moody atmosphere of mid-century monster movies.
