Provenance

Where it came from

Shambleshark was released in February 2013 as part of the Gatecrash expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a common-rarity creature representing the Simic Combine, one of the ten guilds of the Ravnica plane. The set focused on the guild's biological experimentation themes, blending nature and technology to create hybrid monsters that could adapt to changing battlefield conditions.

The card was illustrated by artist Johann Bodin, who rendered the creature as a surreal fusion of a land-dwelling predator and deep-sea shark anatomy. Within the game's mechanics, the card was notable for its flash ability, which allowed players to cast it at instant speed, representing the opportunistic and ambush-heavy nature of the Simic aesthetic. It remains a recognizable piece of early 2010s set design, favored by casual players for its peculiar creature type and functional utility in draft formats.
