Where it came from
Shanna, Purifying Blade was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a pivotal character in the game's lore, the daughter of Sisay and a leader of the Benalish forces during the Phyrexian invasion of Dominaria. The card was designed to reflect her role as a defensive stabilizer, utilizing a mechanics-driven approach to bolster the resilience of one's board presence as a player's life total increases.
The illustration was rendered by artist Anna Steinbauer, who is known for her graceful and emotive fantasy character work within the Magic: The Gathering catalog. Steinbauer’s design focuses on a dynamic, heroic depiction of Shanna mid-battle, emphasizing the ethereal energy of her blade and her protective posture. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficient mana cost and its utility in Commander format decks, where it serves as a versatile support creature.
