Where it came from
The Shard token was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Kaldheim. In the lore of the game, this set drew heavy inspiration from Norse mythology, featuring themes of icy realms, planar travel, and ancient cosmic battles. The token was designed to represent a specific, temporary game effect generated by the card 'Cosmos Elixir,' acting as a physical placeholder for the battlefield interactions central to that set's mechanics.
The artwork for this token features the distinct aesthetic style established for the Kaldheim plane, characterized by sharp, crystalline edges and a color palette of deep blues and icy whites. Illustrators for the set focused on capturing the cold, otherworldly essence of the plane's environment, ensuring the token felt cohesive with the broader visual language of the expansion. Upon release, it was distributed within booster packs alongside the main set, functioning as a standard functional accessory for players engaging with the Kaldheim limited environment.
