Where it came from
Sharding Sphinx was originally introduced in the Shards of Alara expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2008, designed to embody the mechanical identity of the Esper shard, which focused on artifacts and blue mana. The card was later included in the Starter Commander Decks, specifically as card number 59, to provide players with a powerful, thematic centerpiece for artifact-focused strategies in the Commander format.
The creature was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific fantasy artist known for his atmospheric approach to world-building. Briclot designed the Sphinx to reflect the metallic, construct-heavy aesthetic of Esper, blending organic avian features with intricate, artificial plating. Upon its release, the card gained significant traction among players for its ability to generate a swarm of Thopter tokens, solidifying its reputation as a staple for artifact-synergy decks.
