Where it came from
Shark Typhoon was originally released as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set in 2020. This particular version was featured in the Secret Lair Countdown Kit, a limited-edition promotional product released by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate the end of the year. The card serves as a thematic nod to the shark-themed imagery of the Ikoria expansion, reimagined within the distinct, stylized aesthetic characteristic of the Secret Lair series.
The art for this iteration was created by illustrator Graham Yarrington, who moved away from the traditional, hyper-realistic depiction of the card to embrace a more surreal and vibrant approach. The design prioritizes bold color palettes and dynamic composition, aiming to capture the chaotic energy implied by the card's name. Upon its release, it was well-received by players and collectors alike, who frequently praise the Secret Lair line for providing alternative artistic interpretations of staple competitive cards.
