Provenance

Where it came from

Shattered Crypt was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight expansion, the third and final set in the Mirage block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was aggressively expanding the game's narrative depth, the set focused on the crew of the skyship Weatherlight. The card reflects the grim, high-fantasy aesthetic typical of the era, serving as an artifact that allows players to return creatures from the graveyard to play at the cost of life.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Daren Bader, whose contributions defined much of the visual identity for late 1990s Magic cards. Bader utilized a dark, atmospheric style to depict the titular crypt, aiming to evoke themes of necromancy and decay that aligned with the card's mechanical function. Upon release, the card was received as a niche utility item, valued primarily for its specific graveyard recursion ability within black-aligned decks.
