Where it came from
Shattered Perception was released in 2012 as part of the Dark Ascension expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the gothic horror themes of the Innistrad plane, emphasizing the struggle of humanity against overwhelming supernatural threats. This blue sorcery card fits into the set's mechanical identity, which often utilized the graveyard and mechanics like flashback to reflect the cyclical and decaying nature of the world.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Dan Scott, who was tasked with visualizing the psychological strain of the Innistrad setting. The art depicts a fractured mirror reflecting a distorted mage, capturing the theme of losing one's grip on reality under the influence of madness. Within the game's competitive environment, it was recognized as a versatile tool for hand manipulation, favored for its ability to refill a player's resources in the late stages of a match.
