Where it came from
Shell Skulkin was released in 2008 as part of the Eventide set, the third and final installment in the Shadowmoor block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the gloom-filled plane of Shadowmoor, which had been transformed by a magical event known as the Great Aurora, the set explored themes of darkness, fear, and transformation. The creatures in this block were designed to reflect a distorted, more sinister version of the idyllic Lorwyn plane that preceded it.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a prolific illustrator known for his dynamic and atmospheric work on the game throughout the mid-2000s. Moeller’s design for the Shell Skulkin focuses on the grotesque, creature-heavy aesthetic of the Shadowmoor environment.
