Provenance

Where it came from

The Shield of Kaldra was originally released in the 2004 Magic: The Gathering expansion Darksteel, designed as one of three legendary equipment pieces that, when combined, summon the avatar creature Kaldra. The promo version, marked with the star symbol and collector number 139, was distributed through the Friday Night Magic program, a series of local tournament events intended to foster community and reward regular players.

The design was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a celebrated fantasy artist known for his painterly, classical approach to Magic card art. Giancola focused on depicting the shield as a relic of immense, ancient power, utilizing a muted, metallic palette to evoke the cold, industrial aesthetic of Mirrodin’s darksteel metal. The card is highly regarded by collectors for its role in the game’s lore and for Giancola's distinct interpretation of the Mirrodin plane's artifact-heavy environment.
