Where it came from
The Shimian Night Stalker was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was notable for introducing multi-colored cards to the game mechanics, encouraging players to branch out beyond single-color decks. The set drew heavily from mythological and folkloric inspirations, reflecting the game's shift toward more expansive world-building in its early years.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, one of the original illustrators for the game. Maddocks utilized his signature dark, atmospheric style to capture the creature's menacing essence, grounding the Shimian Night Stalker within the grim, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined much of the early Magic: The Gathering art direction. Upon release, the card was received as a standard creature for black-aligned decks, recognized for its specific utility within the strategic framework of the Legends expansion.
