Where it came from
Shimmer Dragon was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem in the Throne of Eldraine set in 2019, designed as a rare creature that rewards players for controlling numerous artifacts. Its inclusion in Jumpstart 2022, a set released in December 2022, reflects Wizards of the Coast's strategy of reprinting popular utility creatures to facilitate the set's unique, randomized deck-building format. This version retains the original mechanics and thematic alignment with the high-fantasy, fairy-tale aesthetics of the Eldraine plane.
The card features artwork by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who is known for her contributions to the game's distinct visual identity. Steinbauer aimed to capture the ethereal, crystalline nature of the dragon, emphasizing its connection to the shimmering artifacts it protects. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its synergy in artifact-heavy archetypes, becoming a staple in Commander formats where permanent-heavy board states are common.
