Where it came from
Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker first appeared in the 2005 Betrayers of Kamigawa set, designed to explore themes of graveyard recursion and sacrifice synergy. The character is rooted in the folklore-inspired setting of Kamigawa, depicting a spirit guardian bound to the Shizo estate. The card mechanics, which return low-power creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield at the end of every turn, solidified Shirei as a niche but beloved centerpiece for dedicated Commander decks focused on attrition and token sacrifice loops.
This specific iteration, numbered 676, was released as part of the 2023 Commander Masters set. It features updated, stylized artwork that maintains the ghostly, melancholic aesthetic of the original Japanese-inspired design. The Commander Masters printing serves as a showcase for popular legendary creatures from the game's history, providing players with a visually refreshed version of the character while retaining the strategic utility that has kept Shirei relevant in the format for nearly two decades.
