Shivan Wurm

Shivan Wurm was released in the 2001 Magic: The Gathering set Planeshift, the second installment of the Invasion block. During this era of the game, the creative team focused on the conflict between the Phyrexians and the forces of Dominaria, emphasizing gold-bordered, multicolored cards that represented the alliance between various factions. The Shivan Wurm was designed to reflect the powerful, aggressive nature of the Kavu and Wurm creatures native to the volcanic region of Shiv, serving as a high-impact threat that required careful resource management due to its ability to return a creature to its owner's hand.

The card’s striking illustration was provided by artist Ron Spencer, a prominent figure in early Magic art known for his visceral, high-energy style. Spencer’s depiction of the Wurm captures the creature's immense scale and elemental tie to the Shiv landscape, utilizing bold lines and dynamic composition to convey its dominance on the battlefield. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency as a red-green finisher, often appearing in aggressive decks that could exploit its color requirements and substantial combat power.
