Where it came from
Sigil Captain was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique in the game's history as the first to consist entirely of multi-colored cards, reflecting the thematic fusion of the fractured shards of Alara. The card was designed to support the Selesnya-aligned mechanic of token creation, rewarding players for deploying smaller creatures by instantly boosting their stats.
The card features artwork by Greg Staples, whose work often captures the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Naya and Bant regions of the Alara plane. His design emphasizes the tactical, communal nature of the card's ability, depicting a mounted soldier rallying forces. Upon release, it was well-received by players interested in creature-heavy strategies, particularly within the Commander format where its synergy with token generators remains highly valued.
