Where it came from
Dragon Broodmother was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the final set in the Shards of Alara block, Alara Reborn was unique in that every card featured multiple colors of mana, emphasizing the reunification of the fractured plane of Alara. The card was designed to embody the Jund shard, a region defined by survival of the fittest, which is represented mechanically through its ability to produce tokens and the devour keyword.
The artwork was created by fantasy illustrator Jaime Jones, who sought to capture the ferocious, predatory nature of the creature within the volcanic environment of Jund. The design focused on the interplay between the mother dragon and her offspring, utilizing vibrant colors to distinguish the card as a high-rarity mythic rare. Upon its release, it became a staple in competitive and casual play due to its self-sustaining battlefield presence and synergy with sacrifice-themed strategies.
