Silverflame Squire // On Alert

Silverflame Squire, a creature card featuring the Adventure mechanic, was released in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering expansion Throne of Eldraine. The set was designed to evoke a high-fantasy world heavily inspired by classic fairy tales and Arthurian legend, introducing a variety of mechanics that mirrored storybook tropes. The Adventure mechanic specifically allows a player to cast an instant or sorcery spell from their hand before placing the card into exile, from which they can later cast the creature itself.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the game known for his expressive and luminous style. In this piece, Voss depicts a young squire preparing for battle, emphasizing the gallant and chivalrous themes central to the set's visual identity. The card was well-received by players for its tactical flexibility, serving as both a combat trick and a board presence, which helped solidify its place in the Limited format environment of the era.
