Where it came from
Simian Spirit Guide was originally introduced in the Planar Chaos expansion, serving as a red-aligned color-shifted counterpart to the green Elvish Spirit Guide. The card is designed as a ritual effect, allowing players to exile it from their hand to add one red mana to their pool, a mechanic that enables explosive, fast-paced plays in formats like Modern and Legacy.
For the Masters 25 printing, the card features artwork by artist Magali Villeneuve. Her rendition maintains the iconic aesthetic of the creature—a primate-like entity imbued with primal energy—while updating the visual presentation to fit the high-fidelity aesthetic standard of the celebratory anniversary set. The card is widely recognized by players for its utility in combo decks that require a sudden mana boost.
