Provenance

Where it came from

Simic Guildmage was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension set, the final expansion in the original Ravnica: City of Guilds block. It represents the Simic Combine, one of the ten iconic guilds of Ravnica, known for their focus on biological experimentation and adaptation. The card was designed to embody the guild's primary mechanic, 'graft,' by allowing players to manipulate +1/+1 counters on creatures already on the battlefield.

The artwork for the card was created by fantasy illustrator Jeremy Jarvis. Jarvis sought to capture the aesthetic of the Simic—a blend of organic mutation and structured, scholarly purpose—depicting the mage as a figure mid-manipulation within a laboratory setting. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical flexibility in limited formats, cementing its place as a quintessential representative of the Simic identity in Magic: The Gathering history.
