Where it came from
Sire of Stagnation was released as part of the Battle for Zendikar set in October 2015, specifically appearing as a promotional card. The card features artwork by Chase Stone, who depicted the Eldrazi creature as a looming, otherworldly entity. The design intent was to capture the overwhelming, alien nature of the Eldrazi as they consumed the plane of Zendikar, utilizing high-contrast lighting and surreal geometry to distinguish it from traditional fantasy archetypes.
The card was received by the Magic: The Gathering community as a powerful, albeit high-mana, resource-denial engine in Commander and various casual formats. Its ability to punish opponents for playing lands made it a distinct inclusion in ramp-heavy strategies. As a promo card, it served as a collector's piece for those drawn to its unique frame and the ominous scale of the Eldrazi narrative arc.
