Where it came from
Skittish Valesk was released as part of the Onslaught expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in October 2002. As the first set in the Onslaught block, it reintroduced a heavy mechanical focus on the creature type 'morph,' which allowed players to cast spells face-down as generic 2/2 creatures, emphasizing the chaotic, battlefield-shifting nature of the setting.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a prominent illustrator known for his dynamic, painterly style during the early 2000s. The design was intended to depict the creature's swift, elusive nature within the tribal-focused environment of the Otarian continent. Upon release, it was regarded as a standard common-rarity creature designed primarily for the limited draft environment, where its ability to evade certain blockers served as a tactical utility for red-aligned decks.
