Where it came from
The Skullport Merchant first appeared in the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in 2021. This set marked the first major integration of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying universe into the Magic card game, bringing iconic characters and locations into the game's mechanics. The card represents a shadowy figure from the infamous subterranean city of Skullport, known as the under-city beneath the grand metropolis of Waterdeep.
The artwork was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the merchant's duplicitous nature through a moody, atmospheric aesthetic common in fantasy gaming art. As part of The List—a rotating selection of cards from throughout Magic's history that can be found in set boosters—this specific version serves as a representative of the crossover period between the two Wizards of the Coast properties. It was designed to provide utility in black-aligned decks, specifically functioning as a resource engine that mirrors the lore-based concept of trading health and souls for power.
