Skyclave Shade

Skyclave Shade debuted in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar Rising, a return to the adventure-themed plane of Zendikar. The set was designed to evoke the spirit of exploration and high-fantasy exploration, featuring a refreshed take on the world’s ancient, floating ruins known as Skyclaves. As a black-aligned creature, the Shade serves as a representative of the hostile, unpredictable flora and fauna guarding these levitating architectural relics.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature style to depict the creature as a swirling, ethereal entity integrated into the stone and air of the Skyclaves. In terms of gameplay design, the Shade was crafted to function as a resilient, recurring threat that rewards players for committing mana to the battlefield. It was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency and its ability to act as a mana sink during the late stages of a game, effectively capturing the feeling of an relentless, growing shadow haunting the ruins.
