Where it came from
Skyknight Vanguard was introduced in the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2019. Designed as a low-cost, aggressive creature, it reflects the set's focus on providing accessible yet mechanically interesting cards for both Limited and Standard formats. It represents the Boros guild’s mechanical philosophy, emphasizing direct combat and token generation through the battalion-style trigger.
The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his vibrant and dynamic illustration style. Voss aimed to capture the essence of a high-flying aerial assault force, depicting the vanguard in mid-flight to emphasize the card's ability to swarm the battlefield. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency, particularly in aggressive red-white deck builds of that era.
