Where it came from
Skyship Plunderer was released in 2022 as part of the New Capenna Commander set, a collection of supplemental decks designed to support the core Streets of New Capenna release. The card draws heavily on the set’s Art Deco-inspired, 1920s-noir aesthetic, which reimagines the city of New Capenna as a sprawling metropolis run by demon-led crime families. It fits into the 'flying' and counter-manipulation themes common to blue-aligned cards in the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, designed to interact with the proliferating counter mechanics featured throughout the New Capenna block.
The illustration is credited to artist Ilse Gort, who utilized the set's distinct blend of high-fantasy and prohibition-era glamour to depict a pilot maneuvering a skyship through the city's dense skyline. The design intention was to provide players with a versatile aerial creature that rewards aggressive board states, reflecting the fast-paced, high-stakes atmosphere of the setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece, noted primarily for its synergy in decks focused on loyalty counters and modular board progression.
