Provenance

Where it came from

Skyshroud Archer was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Rath Cycle, Stronghold was designed to flesh out the dark, subterranean world of Rath, a plane dominated by the Phyrexians. The card belongs to the Elves of the Skyshroud forest, reflecting the set's focus on the tension between the invading Phyrexian forces and the indigenous resistance groups.

The artwork for this card was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic illustrators in the game's early history. Rush utilized a distinct, grounded style that often leaned into high-contrast fantasy aesthetics. His design for the Archer captures the rugged, guerilla nature of the Skyshroud elves, emphasizing their role as defensive units capable of sniping aerial threats, which aligned with the mechanical focus on creature-based combat and board control prevalent during that era of the game.
