Where it came from
Skywise Teachings was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card belongs to the set's concluding chapter of the Tarkir block, a narrative-driven block focused on a time-traveling conflict that reshaped the world into a timeline ruled by powerful dragonlords. The card mechanical design serves to reward players for casting noncreature spells, reflecting the set's emphasis on prowess and the meditative, intellectual nature of the Jeskai Way as it transitioned under the influence of the dragonlord Ojutai.
The artwork was illustrated by Volkan Baga, a frequent contributor to the game whose style is known for atmospheric lighting and focus on movement. In this piece, Baga depicts a monk in a tranquil, elevated setting, emphasizing the scholarly pursuit of knowledge that defined the Jeskai aesthetic. Upon its release, the card was widely utilized in Limited formats and found a home in various casual constructed decks, appreciated for its ability to generate repeatable creature tokens and provide incremental value throughout the course of a game.
