Provenance

Where it came from

Slavering Nulls was released in February 2010 as part of the Worldwake expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set followed the Zendikar block’s mechanical focus on the 'Landfall' ability, which rewards players for playing land cards. The card represents the set's high-fantasy horror aesthetic, depicting the predatory creatures found within the plane of Zendikar.

The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, a longtime contributor to the game known for his dark, visceral style. Kendall sought to capture the feral, mindless nature of the Nulls—undead creatures native to Zendikar that have been drained of their vitality. Upon its release, the card was viewed as a staple for limited play formats, prized for its ability to punish opponents who could not effectively defend against low-cost, aggressive attackers.
