Smogsteed Rider

Smogsteed Rider was released in 2006 as part of the Guildpact expansion, the second set in the Ravnica: City of Guilds block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents the Orzhov Syndicate, a guild defined by its dual nature as both a religious institution and a ruthless crime syndicate, characterized mechanically by its focus on life-draining effects and the interplay between light and shadow. The set was designed to emphasize the guild-based structure of the Ravnica plane, with each card reflecting the specific aesthetic and mechanical identity of the color pairs it represented.

The card was illustrated by Anthony Francisco, who sought to capture the unsettling, spectral aesthetic of the Orzhov. The art depicts a skeletal rider mounted on a ghostly, vaporous steed, embodying the theme of afterlife servitude and industrial decay present in the Orzhov’s urban domain. Upon release, the card was viewed primarily as a limited-format utility piece, appreciated for its ability to provide repeatable evasion and combat bonuses within the Orzhov draft archetypes, cementing its place as a representative example of the set's gothic, bureaucratic horror style.
