Where it came from
Snapcaster Mage was originally designed by Magic: The Gathering lead designer Mark Rosewater and development team member Tiago Chan, the latter of whom earned the right to design a card after winning the 2007 Magic Invitational. Chan requested a card that rewarded skilled timing and allowed players to reuse their spells from the graveyard, leading to the creation of a creature that grants flashback to instant and sorcery cards. Since its debut in the Innistrad set in 2011, it has become one of the most iconic and powerful utility creatures in the game's history.
The Ultimate Box Topper version, featuring the collector number U5, was released in 2018 as part of the Ultimate Masters set. This premium, borderless treatment features artwork by Johannes Voss, who updated the character's visual identity with a refined, ethereal aesthetic that maintains the original's essence while utilizing the larger frame afforded by the card's special formatting. It was warmly received by the community as a prestigious, highly visible iteration of a modern classic, serving as a staple in competitive formats like Modern and Legacy.
