Where it came from
Snow Hound was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to explore themes of winter and survival, introducing the snow-covered land mechanic to the game. It served as a thematic follow-up to the Homelands expansion, aiming to bring more tactical depth to the creature combat system through cold-weather environmental effects.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Anson Maddocks, who was a prominent figure in the game's early visual identity. Maddocks utilized his signature gritty, organic style to depict the creature as a beast adapted to the harsh, frigid landscapes of the set. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if modest, addition to green decks, fitting into the era's focus on creature-based combat rather than the high-complexity combos that would dominate later years of the game.
