Where it came from
Solemn Recruit was released as a promotional card for the Aether Revolt set, which debuted in early 2017 as the second half of the Kaladesh block. The card features the revolt mechanic, a thematic centerpiece of the set that rewarded players for having a permanent leave the battlefield, mirroring the lore of a rebellion rising against the Consulate's authority on the plane of Kaladesh.
The artwork was created by illustrator Johann Bodin, who utilized the vibrant, clockwork-inspired aesthetic characteristic of Kaladesh's steampunk-influenced world. As a promo card, it was distributed through Wizards of the Coast organized play events, intended to provide collectors and competitive players with a stylized alternative version of the standard-set card to mark their participation in the game's ecosystem.
