Where it came from
Solemnity was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the desert plane of Amonkhet, the card was designed to reflect the set's themes of divine judgment and the cessation of cycles, serving as a mechanical counter to mechanics that rely on counters, such as energy or experience counters.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a clean, ethereal aesthetic to convey the card's ability to freeze board states. Upon its release, it gained significant attention in competitive formats for its synergistic potential with cards that require the removal of counters as a cost, effectively allowing players to ignore the drawbacks of certain powerful effects.
