Solitary Confinement

Solitary Confinement was originally printed in the Judgment expansion in 2002, but the version found in Modern Horizons 2 is a modern reprint designed to provide players with access to a powerful enchantment within the context of high-power eternal formats. The card is a cornerstone of defensive strategies, allowing a player to effectively shield themselves from damage at the cost of discarding a card during each upkeep, which forces players to balance protection with long-term resource management.

The illustration for this iteration, created by artist Igor Kieryluk, leans into the psychological and physical isolation implied by the card's name. Kieryluk sought to capture the feeling of a self-imposed sanctuary that simultaneously acts as a prison, utilizing stark, claustrophobic lighting and imagery to convey the card's mechanical effect. Upon its inclusion in Modern Horizons 2, the card was well-received by competitive players for its utility in stopping aggressive strategies and combo-heavy archetypes.
