Provenance

Where it came from

Sorceress Queen originally debuted in the Arabian Nights expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1993. It was reprinted in Fourth Edition, the game's first core set to incorporate cards from expansions, as a way to maintain the availability of iconic or mechanically distinct cards for a growing player base. The card is based on themes of folklore and high fantasy, drawing inspiration from the storytelling traditions of the Middle East.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by Amy Weber, one of the original artists involved in the game's earliest stages. Weber’s style during this period was characterized by a distinct, painterly aesthetic that defined the visual language of the game's formative years. The card is mechanically significant for its ability to manipulate power and toughness, reflecting the game's early emphasis on complex interactions that rewarded strategic play.
