Where it came from
The Sorceress Queen card made its debut in the Arabian Nights expansion of 1993, the first expansion set for Magic: The Gathering, before being reprinted in the Fifth Edition core set in 1997. The card was designed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was heavily inspired by the thematic motifs of One Thousand and One Nights, aiming to capture the flavor of Middle Eastern folklore within the game's evolving mechanical framework.
The artwork for the card was created by Jesper Myrfors, the game's original art director. Myrfors sought to evoke a sense of formidable, magical authority that fit the set's exotic narrative. While Fifth Edition updated the frame and card layout to meet modern standards, the original illustration remains a notable example of the early, idiosyncratic aesthetic that helped define the game's early identity among collectors.
