Where it came from
Sorin, Grim Nemesis was originally released in the 2016 expansion Shadows over Innistrad, a set that revisited the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad. The card features the planeswalker Sorin Markov, a central figure in the lore whose narrative arc involves the tragic confrontation with his own creation, the archangel Avacyn. This specific version, numbered 251s, is a promotional iteration featuring alternate art that highlights the character's brooding, somber aesthetic within the dark atmosphere of the setting.
The artwork for this promo was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a renowned fantasy artist known for her evocative and painterly style. Villeneuve sought to capture the weary, conflicted nature of the vampire lord, emphasizing his status as an ancient and powerful entity burdened by the decline of his home world. Upon its release, the card was well received by the player community for both its mechanical utility as a powerful card-drawing engine and for its striking visual departure from the standard set version.
