Prowess

If a source you control would deal noncombat damage to a creature an opponent controls, put that many -1/-1 counters on that creature instead.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Soul-Scar Mage Secret Lair Drop, featuring collector number 2039, was released by Wizards of the Coast as part of a specialized series of print-on-demand promotional cards. This particular iteration was designed to showcase distinct artistic styles outside of the standard aesthetic established in the primary Amonkhet set, where the creature first debuted as a staple of red-aligned burn decks for its ability to convert non-combat damage into -1/-1 counters.

The artwork for this version was commissioned to emphasize a departure from the traditional desert-themed visual language of the original release. By utilizing the Secret Lair format, the creators aimed to provide collectors with a stylistic alternative that highlights the character's role as a manipulator of magical energy. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players seeking to customize their decks with unique, limited-run illustrations.
