Where it came from
Soul Swindler was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a product within the 'Un-set' series, it was designed to explore unconventional mechanics and humorous themes that fall outside the standard competitive rules of the game. The set's aesthetic blends retro-futuristic science fiction with a carnival aesthetic, aiming to provide a lighthearted experience for players who enjoy silver-bordered or experimental playstyles.
The card features artwork by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who utilized a vibrant, stylized approach to emphasize the character's manipulative persona. The design reflects the set's focus on interactivity and 'stickers,' a central mechanic introduced in Unfinity that allows players to physically alter cards during a match. Upon release, the set was noted for its distinct visual identity and the creative integration of tabletop gaming tropes, ultimately finding a niche among fans of the game's more whimsical artistic offerings.
