Where it came from
Spark Double was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set War of the Spark. The set focused on a massive, climactic conflict on the plane of Ravnica, featuring an unprecedented number of Planeswalker cards. Mechanically, the card was designed to embody the chaotic nature of the narrative, allowing players to create a copy of a creature or planeswalker that ignores the typical legendary restriction, reflecting the instability of the multiverse during the crisis.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often defines the high-fantasy aesthetic of modern Magic expansions. Kieryluk chose to emphasize the fluid, shifting appearance of the shapeshifter, capturing the transformation process mid-motion. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its unique utility in Commander and other eternal formats, where its ability to duplicate powerful legendary permanents provides significant strategic flexibility.
