Spectral Prison

Spectral Prison was released in 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the return of the archangel Avacyn to the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad, aiming to shift the narrative tone from the bleak survival of the previous blocks to a grander struggle between light and darkness. As an enchantment within this set, the card was designed to mechanically represent the angelic protection and binding magic characteristic of the white mana color identity.

The card's visual identity was crafted by artist Vincent Proce, whose work often explores ethereal and macabre themes. Proce intended for the illustration to convey a sense of divine confinement, using glowing, celestial chains to bind spectral entities. The design was well-received by players for its thematic consistency with the set's aesthetic, serving as a functional tool in limited gameplay environments to neutralize aggressive threats through a top-down design approach.
