Spellshock

Spellshock was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third and final set in the Rath Cycle, Exodus was designed to conclude the storyline involving the plane of Rath and the Phyrexians, introducing mechanics that rewarded players for casting multiple spells in a single turn. The card was created as a red enchantment intended to punish players for the rapid casting of spells, serving as a distinct deterrent in the metagame of the late nineties.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a foundational figure in Magic’s early aesthetic whose work defined much of the game’s visual identity during its first decade. Rush’s design for Spellshock focuses on the visceral reaction to magical backlash, using bold lines and his characteristic use of color to emphasize the intensity of the card's effect. Upon its release, it was regarded as a niche but effective sideboard option, valued by players for its ability to shift the momentum of high-velocity gameplay.
