Where it came from
The Sphinx of Uthuun was released in July 2011 as part of the Magic 2012 core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to serve as a high-mana creature that offered card advantage, echoing the mechanics of classic powerful blue cards that allowed a player to filter through their library and replenish their hand. This design philosophy placed it firmly in the tradition of Sphinx creatures, which are traditionally depicted as intellectually formidable, logic-driven guardians within the game's lore.
The artwork was created by Igor Kieryluk, who focused on capturing the majestic and imposing presence of a Sphinx situated in an ethereal, scholarly environment. The design emphasizes the creature's connection to the pursuit of knowledge, utilizing cool blue tones and intricate detailing to distinguish it as a rare, powerful entity. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its 'Fact or Fiction' style ability, which provided a strategic layer of decision-making that rewards skillful gameplay.
