Where it came from
Sphinx's Decree was released in 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan promotional set. It was distributed through Wizards of the Coast's Friday Night Magic program, serving as a participation or placement prize to incentivize local game store attendance during the expansion's release window. The card features unique alternate artwork that distinguishes it from the standard version found in booster packs.
The card's illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, who utilized a distinct, moody aesthetic to reflect the mysterious nature of the sphinxes in the Ixalan setting. His design focuses on the ethereal, avian characteristics of the creature, emphasizing the theme of magical silence and prohibition central to the card's mechanical function. Upon release, it was well-regarded by collectors who favored its sleek, thematic visual departure from the main set's more vibrant, tribal-focused art style.
