Where it came from
Spider-Man 2099, also known as Miguel O'Hara, was introduced in 1992 as part of the Marvel 2099 line, a creative initiative to reimagine the Marvel Universe a century into the future. The character was developed by writer Peter David and artist Rick Leonardi, who aimed to move away from the traditional tropes of Peter Parker by creating a protagonist driven by a different set of personal and corporate struggles in the dystopian city of Nueva York.
The visual design of the suit, characterized by its striking blue and red color scheme with a prominent spider-skull motif, was heavily influenced by the Day of the Dead imagery and a desire to create a more aggressive, cyber-futuristic aesthetic. The design was received with significant interest, as it provided a distinct contrast to the classic Spider-Man suit while remaining grounded in the themes of responsibility and power that define the mantle.
