Spinnerette, Arachnobat

Spinnerette, Arachnobat was released in 2022 as part of Unfinity, the fourth installment in Wizards of the Coast's 'Un-' series. This set is defined by its experimental, tongue-in-cheek approach to Magic: The Gathering, intentionally pushing the boundaries of typical game rules through 'silver-bordered' design sensibilities and themes centered on a retro-futuristic space carnival. The character design is a direct nod to classic comic book tropes, reimagining the superhero archetype within the whimsical, self-referential aesthetic that distinguishes the Un-set experience from standard competitive play.

The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the character's dual nature by blending arachnid elements with a stylized, heroic silhouette. Within the context of the set's design, Spinnerette serves as a commentary on the complexity of keyword-heavy card design. By incorporating a sprawling list of abilities, the design team intended for the card to be both a functional game piece and a meta-joke about power creep, a characteristic that made it a notable highlight for collectors who appreciate the humor inherent in the Unfinity expansion.
