Spire Golem

Spire Golem was released in 2004 as part of the Darksteel expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the metallic plane of Mirrodin, where the artifact-themed mechanics shifted the game's balance toward colorless items. Designed as an uncommon creature, the card serves as a thematic representation of the plane's construct-heavy environment, utilizing the affinity for artifacts mechanic to reward players for filling their battlefield with metallic permanents.

The artwork was provided by fantasy illustrator Greg Staples, who captured the towering, industrial aesthetic of the Golem. Staples utilized a muted, steely color palette to emphasize the machine-like nature of the entity. Upon its release, the card became a notable staple in competitive blue-based affinity decks, where its ability to be cast for a significantly reduced cost made it a highly efficient mid-game threat that was difficult for opponents to remove.
