Where it came from
The Spirit token, indexed as collector number 23 in the Commander 2015 set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in November 2015. These cards were included as supplemental components in the five preconstructed decks released that year, designed to represent battlefield entities created by various spells and abilities throughout gameplay. Unlike standard trading cards, tokens serve as functional placeholders to track temporary game states, reflecting the evolving mechanics of the Commander format which necessitates a wide variety of summoned creatures.
The visual design of this specific token was crafted to align with the overarching aesthetic of the Commander 2015 product line, which featured a recurring theme of experience counters and modular commander interactions. The artwork focuses on the ethereal, spectral qualities characteristic of the Spirit creature type within the broader visual lexicon of the game. It was received as a standard utility component, appreciated by players for its utility in gameplay clarity and its contribution to the immersive experience of the format's diverse tribal themes.
