Where it came from
Spitting Image was originally released in the Shadowmoor expansion in 2008, later appearing in the Commander Legends set as an uncommon card. The card functions as a sorcery that creates a token copy of a target creature, with the added utility of being able to return it to its owner's hand to be cast again. This design reflects the theme of duplication and shifting identities central to the Shadowmoor plane's aesthetic of duality and change.
The artwork was illustrated by Dave Kendall, whose distinct, painterly style captures the grotesque and fantastical nature of the creature being mimicked. Kendall's work on this piece emphasizes the distorted, metamorphic quality of the spell, aligning with the dark fantasy tone of the set. It remains a staple for players looking for repeatable creature copy effects in casual Commander formats.
