Squee's Embrace

Squee's Embrace was released in 2001 as part of the Apocalypse set, the final expansion in the Invasion block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set's narrative centered on the climax of the Phyrexian Invasion, a monumental conflict in the game's lore. The card depicts Squee, a recurring goblin character known for his resilience and accidental immortality, reflecting the whimsical yet chaotic tone Wizards of the Coast aimed to maintain even during the game's darker thematic phases.

The artwork was created by Greg Staples, whose illustrative style was instrumental in defining the visual language of the era. Staples chose to emphasize Squee's frantic and comedic nature, contrasting the character's signature goofiness with the overwhelming scale of the Phyrexian threat. While the card is primarily remembered by players for its specific mechanics involving graveyard recursion, its design serves as a nostalgic touchstone for fans who followed Squee’s extensive character arc through the Invasion block.
